Puppy Training Tip # 4 – Teaching your puppy to sit & Teaching your puppy “down”

I prefer to use the “positive reinforcement” method of training.

SIT

Using a food treat (I use the puppies food), hold the food over the puppy’s nose and slowly move it up and over the puppy’s head.  When the puppy follows the food with her head she will sit down.  When you puppy (dog) does this, say the word “sit” with the action.  If your pet lifts her front legs up or jumps, you are holding the food treat to high.  As soon as your pet sits, say “good sit” and give the treat.  Many repetitions may be necessary for your puppy to learn to associate the food treat with the sit.  Just remember all dogs learn at different speeds, don’t get frustrated and give up.  As your puppy (dog) learns to understand what you want her to do, give food treats less over time.  You should also remember to try this in many different places throughout your home, as well as outside.

DOWN

Once your puppy as learned to sit you can start teaching the “down” command.  Have her in the “sit” position and then have her lay down by taking a treat, lowering it between her front paws and pulling the treat forward  while saying “down”.  Usually the puppy will follow the treat down.  If your puppy does not lay all the way down slowly push the treat between the paws.  When the puppy lays down, give her the treat and of course add, “GOOD GIRL” .  If she stands up, start over with her sitting again.  Many repetitions may be necessary for your puppy to learn to associate the food treat with the down.  Just remember all dogs learn at different speeds, don’t get frustrated and give up.  As your puppy (dog) learns to understand what you want her to do, give food treats less over time.  You should also remember to try this in many different places throughout your home, as well as outside.
